Information about preserved Brunia

What is Brunia?

Brunia, also known as Brunia albiflora, is a shrub native to South Africa that is known for its natural and unique beauty. It is famous for its characteristic spherical flowers, which are spherical in shape and usually white or greyish in colour. Although it does not have prominent leaves, the leaves are small and elongated and their texture can be soft and velvety. Brunia can bring a unique aesthetic to floral arrangements. .

In its natural state, Brunia (Brunia albiflora) exhibits a vibrant dark green, punctuated by small white spheres that emerge in winter and spring. Although it does not have dense foliage, its compact, branching growth adds texture and volume to floral compositions, making it a versatile and elegant decorative piece.

Preserved Brunia retains the charm of the natural plant, but with a much longer shelf life. Thanks to the preservation process, its appearance remains fresh and vibrant and its texture smooth. This process not only preserves its firm structure and spherical characteristics, but also allows the shades of grey and white to remain vibrant for much longer. Because it is odourless, preserved Brunia is ideal for interiors, as it does not interfere with other aromatic elements in the environment. This version offers the same unmistakable elegance, but with the advantage of not requiring any additional maintenance, making it a practical and durable choice for decoration.

Durability of Brunia

Natural Brunia, like most fresh flowers and plants, has a limited shelf life once cut. Under optimal conditions, a Natural Brunia stem will last between one and two weeks, depending on the environment and care it receives. Keeping it in cool water, out of direct sunlight and in a temperature controlled environment can help to maximise its lifespan.

Preserved Brunia, thanks to a process that replaces the natural sap with a preservative solution, can last for several months or even years, but it should be noted that the care required, although very little, is very different.

How to keep preserved Brunia in good condition?

  • Avoid any action that may crush, press or bend foliage, petals and flowers.
  • Avoid direct or indirect exposure to sunlight.
  • Avoid the presence of intense sources of indirect light, including those behind glass or similar surfaces.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to environments with humidity levels above 50%.
  • Avoid continuous exposure to temperatures exceeding 30°C.
  • The use of these elements is recommended for indoor use only.

Production and preservation process

  1. Selection and preparation: We carefully select Brunia stems to ensure they are in optimum condition.
  2. Preservative treatment: The preservative and colorant (50% glycerin + water + colorants) are applied by the absorption method, immersing the lower part of the stems in the liquid. After 24 to 36 hours, when the preservative has been totally absorbed, the product can pass to the next phase.
  3. Drying: The product passes to the drying station with a higher temperature and a lower percentage of ambient humidity where it will remain for 24 to 48 hours.
  4. Inspection and packaging: Finally, we remove damaged and wilted leaves and select only the best, healthiest and most attractive stems, and carefully pack it to protect it during transportation and storage.

Why do we believe so strongly in the quality of Saint Dorothy?

We carefully control the entire process. From the care and treatment of the plants, the specific manual selection of the specimens that present the best conditions, the preservation process, to the packaging and transport through our own transport service Verdnatura.

Before packaging, each plant is subjected to a final inspection. We check the integrity of the plant’s structure, flexibility and overall appearance. In addition, the plants are carefully packed to avoid damage during transport and we use packaging materials that protect the plants from moisture and shocks.

Finally, we collect and analyze feedback from florists and other customers to identify areas for improvement in our production and preservation processes and implement continuous improvements based on this feedback to ensure that our plants maintain the highest quality.
